Benji Shines

Hey readers! Benji, the Most Excellent Wonder Dog here. Why Most Excellent, you ask? Well, Sit and Stay, then, if you Beg Pretty, Roll Over and Play Dead, I’ll tell you my tail. Yeah I spelt it my way. Take it up with my agent, if you have a problem with that.

Here is my list of reasons:

  1. I hold my bodily functions in check through the long night (and boy is it a longgggg night) and patiently await my morning walk to solve this matter (most times). Can you do that?
  2. I’m a good boy! Don’t contradict me. You told me so 136 times already today. I can count, you know!
  3. I fetch the things that you throw away. Why you throw them away, I’ll never know, but I bring ’em back ’cause I know you do not really want to lose them.
  4. I beg for my food. I mean, c’mon, do you beg for your food? Would you, if someone asked you to do it? Yeah, right! Sit pretty. Sit pretty. Beg. Beg. Good Boy!
  5. I help with your hygiene by licking your face, your hands, your feet, any skin that is showing, really. You really should practice better hygiene.
  6. I clean the floor all the time. Try me! Drop a tasty morsel on the floor and I will have it all cleaned up in no time flat. You will never know it was there.
  7. I greet you every time your come into the house or even the room. I mean, who else does that for you? Most of your friends just go…Meh, you’re here. So what?
  8. I let you put a harness and leash on me, so we can go outside. I don’t see anyone putting a harness or leash on you. Don’t you trust me? You know I’m a good boy! Nudge, nudge, wink, wink.
  9. I bark to alert you when scary people, scary dogs, scary cars, scary garbage trucks, scary mopeds, scary bicycles, scary skateboards, scary strollers and scary vacuums come your way. How would you know when to watch out otherwise?
  10. I let you rub my tummy sometimes. When was the last time you let someone rub your tummy and don’t say your significant other. That does not count. My tummy rubs are totally public and above board.
  11. I keep you warm on cold days and on warm days, by sitting on your lap, draping myself around your neck, laying in bed with you. Who keeps me warm, buster? When do I get paid back?
  12. Despite all this, I love you unconditionally. How could I do otherwise. You are my world.

Benji really digs you!

Wanna play?

I’m gonna get ya. I’m gonna get ya.

This is where I really shine

look at how well I can balance

Hey, I can paws to take in the moment too, ya know!

Ooooh, a bubble. I love bubbles. They’re shiny,. they’re sparkly. Oooh, another bubble.

Stand still buster. I’m comin’ to shake myself off right next to you. I’m really not that wet, you know. You can trust me…..

Hey, how’d this cloud get down here? Am I up in the sky? What’s happening?

One last run and then I’ll let you harness and leash me. You bet I am Most Excellent!

Not much to tell. After working for 3 companies over 43+ years (38 years 7 months with my last company), I finally got that promotion I had waited my entire career for……retirement. I have been exploring this new career for the past 7+ years and while it is not always exciting, the chance to do what I want for myself and my family instead of what my company wants has been very fulfilling. Early on, there was a long list of projects in my “to-do” hopper and I attacked these projects with a vengeance for the first 9 months of retirement. Eventually, my brain told me that this was not what retirement was about, so it took me another 5 months before my industriousness again took over and I attacked another line of projects, this time somewhat shorter and less complicated, as well as many new projects related to the family weddings in 2016. After going hard for 6 weeks and 3 weddings, my body was telling me to relax, then the flu bug hit and as soon as that was done with me, my sciatic acted up. No rest for the wicked. In 2020 and 2021, the Covid 19 pandemic changed the whole retirement gig. I was lucky to not be still working, for sure. I enjoy photography, gardening, working with my hands, walking, cycling, skiing, travelling, reading and creating special photo and video productions obtained in my first pastime. I may never become wealthy in any of these pursuits, but I already feel I am rich in life experiences far beyond any expectation.

    1. My son refers to his full name as Benjinald Spickles Barkely. That works to for all those formal occasions, where Benji is not highbrow enough. Thanks for reading and joining the conversation. Allan
